Egypt urges AU to reject Israel’s recognition of Somaliland
During a virtual ministerial meeting, Abdelatty described the move as “a flagrant violation of international law, the UN Charter, and the Constitutive Act of the African Union,” warning that it threatens both regional and global peace, particularly in the Horn of Africa.
He urged the AU Peace and Security Council to convene urgently to reaffirm Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity, and to reject any unilateral actions undermining regional stability.
The call follows a statement by the Arab League on Sunday, which urged the UN Security Council to take a strong position on Israel’s recognition of Somaliland and highlighted Mogadishu’s right to defend its territory.
Israel became the first country globally to recognize Somaliland as sovereign on Friday, prompting condemnation from Türkiye, African nations, Middle Eastern states, and others.
Somalia swiftly reiterated its “absolute and non-negotiable” commitment to its sovereignty and unity.
Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991, remains unrecognized internationally and functions as a self-governing administrative, political, and security entity, with the central Somali government struggling to assert authority over the region.
