Ethiopia, US Officials Meet to Discuss Cooperation, Regional Security
Abiy described the discussions as constructive and grounded in mutual respect, according to a post-meeting statement.
The US delegation also met separately with Ethiopia’s Defense Minister Aisha Mohammed and Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos to explore ways to enhance diplomatic and military ties.
The Ethiopian Defense Ministry noted that both sides agreed to cooperate on safeguarding national interests and addressing regional security challenges, including counterterrorism operations.
The visit coincided with the 90th anniversary of the Ethiopian Air Force, which the US officials attended. Gen. Anderson said the trip reaffirmed the long-standing relationship between Ethiopia and the US and helped lay the groundwork for future security cooperation in the Horn of Africa.
These meetings follow renewed regional diplomatic efforts after a January 16 letter from US President Donald Trump to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, proposing a restart of talks over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Africa’s largest hydroelectric project. The letter, reportedly shared with regional leaders, offered to resume mediation aimed at resolving long-standing Nile water disputes.
